Why join freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a journey rather than a destination. Men join not because they seek privilege or status, but because they wish to challenge themselves, build lasting friendships, serve their communities and live according to timeless principles of integrity, respect and compassion. It is an opportunity to become part of something larger than oneself while continually striving to become a better husband, father, friend and citizen.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and most respected fraternal organisations. It is founded upon the principles of integrity, friendship, respect, charity and personal responsibility.

Although Freemasonry uses traditions, symbolism and ceremonies that have developed over many centuries, its purpose is both practical and relevant to modern life. It encourages its members to become better men by developing good character, supporting one another and serving the wider community.

Members come from every walk of life. They may differ in occupation, age, culture and background, but they share a commitment to honesty, compassion, tolerance and continual self-improvement.

Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a political organisation. It welcomes men of good character who are willing to respect others and strive to live according to high moral principles.

Who May Join?

Freemasonry welcomes men from many different backgrounds and professions.

While every applicant is considered individually, prospective members generally should:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be of good character and reputation.
  • Believe in a Supreme Being.
  • Join of their own free will.
  • Be willing to learn about Freemasonry and participate in lodge life.
  • Respect the diverse beliefs and opinions of fellow members.

No special qualifications, family connections or professional background are required. Many members knew no Freemasons before making their first enquiry.

What Does Membership Involve?

Membership is far more than attending monthly meetings.

Lodge Seacliff meets on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding January), providing members with opportunities to participate in Masonic ceremonies, educational presentations and lodge business.

Outside regular meetings, members may enjoy:

  • Social dinners and festive boards
  • Family events
  • Charity and community activities
  • Visits to other Masonic lodges
  • Educational evenings
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Building lifelong friendships

Every member contributes according to his own circumstances. Some enjoy taking active leadership roles, while others simply appreciate the fellowship and companionship the lodge provides.
